Last night I was in the bath with Squeakles. (We've been getting right in the tub with him ever since we switched from bathing him in the sink long ago to giving him real baths in the tub.) He was doing his usual - pouring water from one cup into another cup, and every so often, drinking the water from the cups. (We describe Squeakles' baths as "part bath, part beverage".)
At one point he noticed my, um, nether regions and apparently it made him giggle. Then he said "penis". "No penis", I said. But this is what J had been saying to Squeakles the other night to get him to stop pouring water on J's, well, you know. So I followed up with a clarfication: "I don't have one." Well, Squeakles just STOPPED. And looked. And then, without another word, he turned around and went back to playing.
A little while later he started saying "pound cakes" and then "Daddy". Earlier that afternoon, J had shared some pound cake with him (that he'd bought the night before when I told him he might want to pick up a snack in addition to what we needed for dinner since it would be a while before dinner was actually ready, and pound cake was on sale for a dollar), and Squeakles loved it (naturally). I said, "yeah, you had pound cake today with Daddy, remember?"
More pouring of water from one cup to another ensued for a while.
And then, completely umprompted and with his back still towards me, I heard him say "member E [my sister's name]?" Indeed we had Skyped with her that morning, but this was the first time I'd heard him use "remember" on his own. I was so impressed!
